Claire just brought me a book of pictures! It was really cute. I opened the book, and she told me what each one is. "Flower"... "Princess"... "Princess"... "Alcoholic"...
?!?!?!?!
"Alcoholic?"
"Yeah, remember when that guy got chopped up?"

After a little investigation, it was a picture of someone whose cells were being destroyed by alcohol. Reeta told her that alcohol kills brain cells, and she thought it destroyed ALL your cells. Understanding has been clarified (I hope).

Is this actually true? 2 issues, first I thought that the actual chemical response doesn't hit the brain cells, but rather impacts neural pathways. Second kill implies permanent destruction, as far as I know moderate alcohol use doesn't actually "kill" or for that matter impair brain cells. I could be wrong, but you raised an interesting question. Any neurobiologists out there?

Maybe moderate use doesn't, but we're talking alcoholism. Any discussion of moderate use disappears at that point. Both Reeta and I have alcoholics in our families, which is one reason that we're telling Claire to just stay away from it altogether.
And maybe this deserves a post all to itself, but I saw some fairly scary things regarding alcohol while I was in the Philippines. E-mail me some time, and I'll tell you a story about the "Dust Man".

Just to clarify, I did not mean to imply that I think 8 year olds should be drinking, or that parents shouldn't discuss the dangers of alcohol with their kids. I just might phrase the dangers a litle differently.

Please understand that this post was never intende as a suggestion of how you should discuss alcohol with your kids by any means. When you discuss this issue with your kids, you are of course perfectly free to do so the way you want to, and we (as our kid's parents) claim that same privilege.
