Looking for new digs

We've decided to go to Texas after law school. Austin. Which is a good thing, Reeta's family is there, and we'll have a lot of support. I'm planning on taking the Texas Bar in February '06. Meantime, that leaves me in a bit of a quandary.

I mean, I've got to find a job to last at least that long. We've got to figure out HOW to get ourselves and all our stuff down there. Meanwhile, I know no-one in the legal community there. There are quite a few hurdles to get over. But it's the area of the country that we want to wind up in, and everyone I've talked to about it has said that it's a better idea to go straight there after school, take the bar there, and practice, rather than take the Oregon bar, work here a few years to get some experience, and then move down.

Also, because this site is maintained through my Comcast subscription, I'm coming to the realization that I will need to find a new home for my blog. (To go with the new home for the family). I've got a friend who's been using TypePad, and really likes it. I'll probably give that a shot, but it'll be next week.

They passed an Anime ban in Austin??? Thank goodness I live in San Antonio!

Anyway, you'll love Texas, hate the Texas Bar Exam but who loves a bar exam, and we'll be neighbors. LOL.

I don't know much about Typepad, but I use Moveabletype which it's based on, which means it's decent. Methinks you'll like it.

Just means I'll have to take my animé underground... speakeasys for mecha fans, hideaways for the shoujou, that could be interesting... ;)

I know everyone hates Career Services, but honestly, talk to Libby (or Ellen). She has a lot of ideas about how to get things started, and there are time periods during which you can get reciprocity at law schools down there and they'll help you, too.

Also, why not email Beldar and ask if he has any advice on how to get started down there? He's a Texas lawyer. Since you'd be "cold calling" him, though, I'd make it clear that you're just looking for advice, not handouts, recommendations or such.

Finally, I'd start reading the Austin paper so you can get a handle on what's going on down there, what the business climate is like, etc. If there is a business or law journal specific to the area, you might think about subscribing. And there's nothing wrong with sending out a few feelers. If you're going to be in Austin any time before you move, you should set up ahead of time to see if you can meet a lawyer or two for a coke and a chat about the legal climate. And aren't there any contacts you could make through your church? Everyone I've approached in my home area have been very open to giving me advice and helping me out.

Sorry that was pretty lengthy; I should have made it my own post but I was too lazy.
